  • The father of Mary Queen of Scots, James V, died in Falkland Palace shortly after her birth. The palace and its surrounding forest were much favoured by the royal family of Scotland.
  • Manderston House was built to impress and contains a silver staircase.
  • Hopetoun House is one of the most splendid examples of Georgian architecture In Britain being the work of Scottish architects Sir William Bruce and William Adam. Both Bruce and Adam were architects to the Royal house of their day.
  • The Scottish Crown jewels were hidden from Oliver Cromwell's invading army at Dunottar Castle.
  • In the mid 12th century King David built the first stone castle of Inverness, which was destroyed in the Wars of Independence.
